Ick...nature. I nearly stepped in this when I went out the door to feed the dogs this morning. I don't know bug details other than this is (was) a #cicada--a.k.a. the background music of the South. Looking it up, turns out it is (was) a Neotibicen tibicen, commonly called the swamp cicada or morning cicada. Or as I call then, "freakishly large ugly cigar butt loud bugs." #neotibicentibicen #entomology #ick #nature #ewwgross #starshiptroopers

It's that time of year again. Each summer, about a dozen different cicada species emerge to make some noise. Cicada calls are incredibly loud for an insect. They are powerful enough drown out the songs of birds and even human machinery.
I think this one is a swamp cicada (Neotibicen tibicen). Cicadas spend most of their lives beneath the soil where they feed from the roots of trees. When the time comes, they all march out of the ground and up into the trees, where they shed their nymphal skin and get a set of wings. The only mission they have now is to breed until death. By late summer, the ground will be strewn with cicada corpses.
Most species go through an annual life cycle here, but some species stay underground for 17 years before emerging. They are a rare sight to see for bug enthusiasts. If you travel in the Eastern United States during summer, be aware of any 17-year cicada broods that may have emerged. Their emergence is much larger (and louder) than the more common annual ones.

I've been collecting cicadas for about 5 years. Today, I found one unlike any before and my biggest yet. This beauty has a dark brown body and splash of TEAL in the wings. JACKPOT of a find today 😍👽 #cicada #neotibicentibicen #swampcicada #morningcicada

A swamp cicada that I found on the sidewalk outside of my sister’s apartment. 🍂🌿🍂 Lately I’ve been stumbling upon cicadas on the pavement like it’s going out of style! Isn’t it funny how small this one’s hind wings are compared to its forewings? 🖤 #neotibicentibicen

Neotibicen tibicen also called the swamp cicada or morning cicada, is a medium-sized, dark-bodied annual cicada widespread across much of the eastern and central United States.
Cicadas have many predators because of their relatively few defenses. Numerous mammals, reptilians, birds, and arthropods consume cicadas.

(Vespa crabro) A.K.A. European Hornet.
When I first saw this out on the deck, I assumed it was a cicada killer. Upon further inspection of the colors and anatomy of the insect, this is actually a European Hornet! This particular hornet has a black and red head/thorax with black and yellow stripes on the abdomen. In addition, the head is larger than that of a cicada killer. I was freaking out the whole time trying to get a close up shot! .

Neotibicen tibicen A.K.A. Swamp Cicada. I usually just find hollow, molted exoskeletons latched to some random tree, so I'm overly excited about this one! This is the first time I have seen a living adult cicada crawling around outside!!! Absolutely beautiful up close, and still loud! I helped this little guy find a nice tree branch to cling to so he wouldn't get run over in my driveway! Thanks for the gift, NATURE!!

On the sixth day of National Insect Week, I found this cicada outside of one of my favorite local restaurants! 🌱 I believe this amazing creature is a swamp cicada. These cicadas are commonly called morning cicadas since they are reproductively active (i.e. singing loudly) in the morning. 🍂 Cicadas symbolize change, so I figured this was the ideal insect to spotlight today, which is the day before my birthday. Thirty more minutes until I’m officially another year older! 🌾 #neotibicentibicen

Well, sadly, summer is drawing to a close. (Not that I dislike autumn - it's probably my second favorite season - but knowing that summer is almost over only reminds me how fast the year is going by. Anyway.) We've already had our fair share of premature fall-like weather in the past few weeks, and that means that some common summer songsters are wrapping up (or have already wrapped up) their several-month-long concerts.

One of these is the #SwampCicada (#NeotibicenTibicen). Its call (which I've included a clip of in the second part of this post) is heard almost continuously each morning throughout the middle of the year, hence its other common name, the #MorningCicada . For me, hearing this distinctive call (which you've probably heard featured in countless movies before) evokes strong images of the hazy, humid air and strolls through the backyard just after sunrise. But alas, they seem to have fallen silent in my neck of the woods, and I will have to wait until next year to hear them again.

Although the cicadas have handed over the responsibility of leading the dawn chorus to the crickets and a number of other insects, the mornings nonetheless do seem significantly quieter.

First cicada of the season?
I'm not sure, but this might just be a very very early and probably a little confused swamp cicada (shell). This one was in a spot that I highly doubt remained completely untouched since summer, so it must be new right??
Either way this is exciting!! I still don't have a macro lens for my camera (and this was a zoomed in phone pic) but rest assured, by the start of summer I'll be posting extreme close ups! Or as close as I can get.

When we think of #cicadas we usually think of periodical cicadas, which synchronize their breeding and emerge from pupation every 17 years. But #AnnualCicada species work on a different schedule. The young spend 3-5 years as nymphs underground, sucking the sap from tree roots and because breeding is not synchronized new adults emerge every year. #SwampCicadas (#NeotibicenTibicen) are #AnnualCicadas found all over the eastern US. They are sap feeders, adults from tree trunks, nymphs from the roots. #Hemiptera #Cicadidae.

Behold the adorably helpless male swamp cicada (Neotibicen tibicen). There are over 3,390 species of cicada in the world. Every species of cicada has their own song that the male sings by vibrating his tymbals. Their songs and commitment to impressing females is one of the things that make cicadas so cute to me. The blank stare and analogous mindset is definitely another factor hahaha. The cicada in my hand here is a male and you can tell that by the large tymbal flaps on his abdomen just underneath his hindlegs. He was also quite vocal when I picked him up. We work on cicadas in our lab and spend a lot of time playing with their DNA and the fungi's DNA that interacts with cicadas. It's definitely one of the projects in our lab that doesn't fit in with traditional plant pathology but it was the agreed fun topic we would all work on together for a group publication. It's been going on for years now and the list of included species increases almost every time I walk into the lab. My boss is even sending to me New Mexico to collect MORE samples and meet with other professionals to expand the project. Who knows, at the rate we're going, the 3,390 species might all end up being included! #cicada #neotibicen #neotibicentibicen #swampcicada #insect #insectsofinstagram #Hemiptera #entomology #scientist #femalescientist #void #emptymind #blank #nature #naturegram #entomologist #singing #ohiowildlife #ohio #bugs

Neotibicen tibicen, aka the annual, morning, or swamp cicada, is the most commonly heard cicada in the Philadelphia area. With temperatures in the mid to upper 80s (F) and humidity in full swing they are out singing in force. Perhaps that last big hurrah before Fall arrives!🎉 I encountered this male singer on the bridge over the Schuylkill River in Philadephia as I walked to work this morning. (Check out todays ig story for the full encounter) .
