Ick...nature. I nearly stepped in this when I went out the door to feed the dogs this morning. I don't know bug details other than this is (was) a #cicada--a.k.a. the background music of the South. Looking it up, turns out it is (was) a Neotibicen tibicen, commonly called the swamp cicada or morning cicada. Or as I call then, "freakishly large ugly cigar butt loud bugs." #neotibicentibicen #entomology #ick #nature #ewwgross #starshiptroopers

It's that time of year again. Each summer, about a dozen different cicada species emerge to make some noise. Cicada calls are incredibly loud for an insect. They are powerful enough drown out the songs of birds and even human machinery.
I think this one is a swamp cicada (Neotibicen tibicen). Cicadas spend most of their lives beneath the soil where they feed from the roots of trees. When the time comes, they all march out of the ground and up into the trees, where they shed their nymphal skin and get a set of wings. The only mission they have now is to breed until death. By late summer, the ground will be strewn with cicada corpses.
Most species go through an annual life cycle here, but some species stay underground for 17 years before emerging. They are a rare sight to see for bug enthusiasts. If you travel in the Eastern United States during summer, be aware of any 17-year cicada broods that may have emerged. Their emergence is much larger (and louder) than the more common annual ones.

I've been collecting cicadas for about 5 years. Today, I found one unlike any before and my biggest yet. This beauty has a dark brown body and splash of TEAL in the wings. JACKPOT of a find today 😍👽 #cicada #neotibicentibicen #swampcicada #morningcicada

A swamp cicada that I found on the sidewalk outside of my sister’s apartment. 🍂🌿🍂 Lately I’ve been stumbling upon cicadas on the pavement like it’s going out of style! Isn’t it funny how small this one’s hind wings are compared to its forewings? 🖤 #neotibicentibicen

Neotibicen tibicen also called the swamp cicada or morning cicada, is a medium-sized, dark-bodied annual cicada widespread across much of the eastern and central United States.
Cicadas have many predators because of their relatively few defenses. Numerous mammals, reptilians, birds, and arthropods consume cicadas.

(Vespa crabro) A.K.A. European Hornet.
When I first saw this out on the deck, I assumed it was a cicada killer. Upon further inspection of the colors and anatomy of the insect, this is actually a European Hornet! This particular hornet has a black and red head/thorax with black and yellow stripes on the abdomen. In addition, the head is larger than that of a cicada killer. I was freaking out the whole time trying to get a close up shot! .

Neotibicen tibicen A.K.A. Swamp Cicada. I usually just find hollow, molted exoskeletons latched to some random tree, so I'm overly excited about this one! This is the first time I have seen a living adult cicada crawling around outside!!! Absolutely beautiful up close, and still loud! I helped this little guy find a nice tree branch to cling to so he wouldn't get run over in my driveway! Thanks for the gift, NATURE!!

On the sixth day of National Insect Week, I found this cicada outside of one of my favorite local restaurants! 🌱 I believe this amazing creature is a swamp cicada. These cicadas are commonly called morning cicadas since they are reproductively active (i.e. singing loudly) in the morning. 🍂 Cicadas symbolize change, so I figured this was the ideal insect to spotlight today, which is the day before my birthday. Thirty more minutes until I’m officially another year older! 🌾 #neotibicentibicen
