A cornucopia of materials rescued from a simulated 🌊 water disaster 🌊 make up our last #LibraryHarvest post. We held a Disaster Response and Recovery workshop in May, and learned how to handle books, records, cassettes, documents, CDs, and photographs after they've been waterlogged. The workshop was courtesy of a @nehgov grant, and it was a wonderful (yet slightly panic inducing) experience!

For my last #LibraryHarvest post: pages from Work Relief in Missouri: 1934-35, compiled by William Gammon and published by the Missouri Relief Commission in 1935. The work relief was created to care for the millions of families in the United States after federal employment ended with the termination of the Civil Works Administration in 1934. These images document part of the State Garden Program in Missouri, where backyard and community gardening might serve as a self-help relief measure. Despite poor weather conditions, some gardens were successful, and surplus food was canned in work relief canneries and distributed to the needy.
Thanks to @nul_prescons and @rickerlibraryui for the challenge! .

With the weather we've been having in Maine, it can be difficult to remember that it is indeed still autumn. To help brighten up some of the gloomy weather we've been having we present this colorful image for #LibraryHarvest
🍁
This image of harvest comes from "Nova Totivs Terrarvm Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabvla" by Henrik Hondius. This lavishly decorated world map includes representations of the four elements as well as portraits of Julius Caesar, Claudius Ptolemy, and the founders of the atlas, Gerard Mercator and Jodocus Hondius. 🍁
To see all of the details on this gorgeous map you can find it here: http://www.oshermaps.org/map/398.0001

It’s the final day of #LibraryHarvest, and we saved our favorite for last. During the disbinding of this 1614 book, plant bits were found deep in the gutters. Conservation harvest!! They were sealed in Mylar and are kept with the book, along with the original sewing and manuscript fragments that were stuffed in the joints. Interestingly, the book, Purchas his Pilgrimage, is about traveling and world cultures (by a man who didn’t travel, of course). We’d really love some DNA testing on the grasses and seeds to figure out where/what/when. Any takers?
We’ve loved co-hosting this @iglibraries challenge with @rickerlibraryui and seeing everyone’s wonderful posts!! Purchas his Pilgrimage. Or, Relations of the world and the religious observed in all ages and places discovered from the creation into this present. By Samuel Purchas. 1614.

Our final post for the November #libraryharvest challenge is a #WorldWarI poster showing a bountiful harvest of #vegetables: Food is Ammunition - Don't waste it. This #poster was published by the #USFoodAdministration, an agency created in 1917 to assure the supply of food both for the military and for sale to allied countries. Headed by future president Herbert Hoover, the agency used a lot of propaganda posters like this to encourage Americans to make voluntary sacrifices for the war effort by growing some of their own food; avoiding food waste; and cutting back on consumption of foods such as meat, wheat and sugar. #Wednesdaychallenge #librariesofinstagram #iglibraries #WWI #ww1 #harvest

An apple a day may not actually keep the doctor away, but this plate depicting various kinds of apples will make you feel good. It comes to us from the 1659 copy of John Parkinson’s Paradisi in Sole Paradisus Terrestris, a book which was intended to help the English gardener plan a kitchen garden for eating as well as provide instruction on preserving fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

The November #libraryharvest challenge set by @nul_prescons and @rickerlibraryui is over? 😢 But we so wanted to share this 1830s lithograph of Plenty chilling among some grain sheaves. Too late? We hope not, because off-the-shoulder pink gowns and crowns decked with grapes and wheat are apparently de rigueur among the antiquarian set this season! 🙄We’ll be sticking with our usual look (sensible shoes and wool, flannel or fleece to deal with cold stack temperatures) but we say thanks to all for a fun and fulfilling harvest season challenge! #allegory #plenty #lithograph #crowns

The #LibraryHarvest this week is a bit literal, with a 🦃 illustration and definition of harvest from the 1860 American Dictionary of the English Language. The dictionary will be boxed as it's not too sturdy in the spine any longer.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve! I’m joining @rickerlibraryui and @nul_prescons for the Wednesday challenge, #LibraryHarvest. This photograph from the Domino Danzero Photograph Collection featured a display of turkeys to be cooked as Thanksgiving dinner for Modern Woodsmen of America in 1909. Duncan Studios took this photo of the display in Domino’s Cafe window (one of Danzero’s numerous businesses in Springfield), but the majority the Danzero Collection focuses on Domino’s photographic talents. The Missouri State Archives has digitized and displayed images related to Missouri on the Missouri Digital Heritage site, while the physical materials and images are housed in the Archives at Missouri State University.

#DidYouKnow that we’ve got blooms AND books here at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden? The Lora Robins Library has thousands of books and magazines (psst…members have borrowing privileges!), as well as non-circulating treasures, like this copy of The Apples of New York (1905). Spencer Beach, Nathaniel Booth, and Orrin Taylor compiled this two-volume report over the course of two decades, vividly describing the names, uses, histories, and physical attributes of hundreds of varieties of apples and crabapples. Many, like the Gravenstein apple (Malus domestica 'Gravenstein') shown here, are accompanied by crisp photo-engravings, pomologically perfect for the #LibraryHarvest challenge posed by @nul_prescons and @rickerlibraryui! [Image description: book open to a color illustration of a crimson and yellow streaked Gravenstein apple, showing the exterior and a cross-section]

For our final #libraryharvest challenge post of November, we found this amazing Thanksgiving menu cover that seemed most appropriate. This young man seems to have valiantly harvested an enormous sheath of wheat with his trusty axe AND/OR he’s stealthily planning an attack on that turkey who is quite unaware of his upcoming fate. This themed menu cover featured a thanksgiving dinner menu that was heavily focused on game animals including boar and red squirrel along with buffalo and duck. This particular menu from our historic menu collection was from the the Newberry Hotel in Chicago and dated Nov 26, 1908.#specialcollectionsofinstagram #librariesofinstagram #specialcollections #thanksgiving #viintagemenu #turkey #oldmenu

For the #librariesofinstagram @iglibraries #archivesharvest we present a detail from the 1658 map: “Orbis Terrarum Nova et Accuratissima Tabula. Auctore Nicolao Visscher.” The borders of this map are allegorical representations of the four classical elements of the Greek universe (Cosmos): fire, air, water, and earth. Earth, at the lower right, is represented by Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, wearing her characteristic crown of ears of corn and holding a cornucopia overflowing with fruit; vegetables and sheaves of grain lie on the ground and the scene connotes a pastoral thanksgiving.
