Tools of my trade 🎨 : Long before a pencil, pen or paint touches paper my designs start off in my head. Every curve, colour, pattern repeat considered as I go about daily life with my children and family. Now comes the tricky part, bringing them to life on paper.
I draw everything by hand, not a computer in sight. I favour a simple graphite pencil to begin with. Being able to freely draw by hand is a liberating and lovely thing. I may use a fine liner too which helps with more graphic designs. Often my drawings get much more complex than my final fabric designs. On textiles I strip them back a bit as I favour the simplicity and boldness of simple lines.
Once I'm happy with the design, BRING ON THE COLOUR!!! 🌈 This can be pencils or paint, my favourite part is often playing with the colour.
Technology steps in and helps here; I use my computer to scan in all the designs. From here I can test out patterns, play with scale, adjust colours and develop additional colour ways. I have colour reference charts in lots of glorious shades already printed onto fabrics and wallpapers so that it's not too much of a leap of faith when tests come back from our printers. 🙏🏻 I can use these colour charts too, to colour match bespoke designs to fit in with clients existing colour schemes.
Today is a day for me to turn off the computer and draw. 🎨 I have three new collections in mind and on the sketch pad. Art Deco curves with some rather elegant peacocks and swans, florals and a classic co-co-ordinating stripe.
I look forward to sharing them with you all. Happy Thursday folks. ☀️ #toolsofthetrade #willisbloom #timetodraw #turnoffthecomputer #newcollections #newdesigns #lovewhatyoudo #fabricdesigns #curtainfabric
